“Grammy”

Yesterday, while visiting my mom, I stumbled upon this precious photo of my grandmother, and it hit me right in the heart. We believe Grammy was just 21 years old when this picture was taken. Growing up next door to my grandparents was one of the greatest blessings of my life. Their home was a second sanctuary, filled with love, wisdom, and the strength that comes from being people of color navigating life’s challenges.

Grammy and Popsie, as we affectionately called them, were my pillars. They moved from rural Georgia to Connecticut in their first year of marriage, seeking a better life, and that’s how our family is rooted here. I was fortunate to have them in my life well into my adulthood. Losing Gram in my 40s and Popsie nearly a decade later was incredibly hard, but their legacy lives on in my mom, sisters, and every lesson they taught me.

As the saying goes, “A picture’s worth a thousand words.” When I saw this picture, just four came to mind: “I miss you, Grammy.”
