Crowning Glory: A Journey of Transformation, Courage, and Untamed Hair

In the tapestry of life, sometimes the most profound changes come from unexpected places.

For over five decades, I chemically straightened my hair, a choice influenced by societal expectations and unspoken messages. Yet, in the solitude of the pandemic lockdown, a remarkable journey of self-discovery and personal growth unfolded for me.

As the world grappled with uncertainty, I embraced change, beginning with a radical shift in my appearance. I seamlessly shifted from high maintenance to bohemian, relinquishing collective norms for comfort and authenticity. The decision not to straighten my hair became a parable for confronting fears and finding empowerment in challenges.

The untamed mess atop my head mirrored the struggles of my evolutionary journey—moments of doubt, weakness, and wavering resolve. Daily battles with my hair texture paralleled the broader journey of life, teaching me that embracing change requires trust in oneself and the wisdom acquired over time.

In September 2021, I momentarily caved to the familiarity of straightened hair, but it marked a fleeting departure from newfound courage—a lesson in vulnerability. However, September 2022 witnessed my last chemical straightening, as I recommitted to natural hair. The daily struggle with my hair had become a metaphor for navigating the challenges of life as an aging woman on my own.

This journey is not without its share of good and not-so-good days, but each challenge becomes an opportunity for growth and resilience. Recognizing the power of facing uncertainties head-on, I’ve learned that attitude and perseverance are everything. Fear may bubble up at any time, but it’s essential to confront it with informed decisions and trust in the process.

As I continue this hair transition, I recognize that it’s not just about the physical change but a broader step towards overcoming the fear of change. It’s a breakthrough, not a failure. I take comfort in knowing that, whether I decide to see it through or not, I will always hold my head high and straighten my crown, figuratively speaking. Strength and courage, in tandem, guide me as I navigate life on my own.

This journey, shared with love and openness, aims to uplift and inspire others. After all, we’re all navigating our unique paths, and sometimes, a change in hairstyle is just the beginning. Here’s to conquering fears, embracing change, and walking this journey with strength and confidence.

Love y’all, and I hope this helps someone today.
